Overview
Radio Candela is my app for listening to live radio: hundreds of stations from Spain and around the world, one tap away, in a modern, fast interface with no ads and no sign-up.
It started from a simple idea: make listening to the radio as easy as pressing a button again, without giving up everything an app can add. On top of playing the station, it shows what song is on, keeps your history, wakes you up with your favourite show and lets you explore stations from any country.
I build it on my own, little by little in my free time, with Flutter. It's now live on Google Play and keeps growing with every version: the first release shipped, among other things, a sleep timer and an improved first-run setup.
Special thanks to Radio Browser API, whose open station database makes much of this information possible.
The challenge
Make listening to the radio as easy as pressing a button again —no ads, no sign-up— while bringing everything a modern app can offer.

How I built it
Three angles I care about in every project: how it looks, how it works and how it is built underneath.
Design
An app you want to open
My own design from start to finish: a lilac and turquoise identity, station logos framed so they all look equally good, a clean player with an animated pulse while it plays and a playback bar always at hand.
- Playback bar across the whole app
- Subtle, purposeful animation
- Screens tested on small phones and with larger text
Quality
Quality you can measure
A broad suite of automated tests —from the station catalogues to onboarding in every language and screen size—, strict static analysis and a test environment kept apart from production before every release.
- Automated tests in every area
- Strict analysis rules
- Releases shipped with their changelog
Architecture
Organised by feature
Each area —home, player, alarms, lists, settings— lives in its own module, with the UI kept apart from the logic and the data access. The player lives at app level, so the music keeps going as you navigate, and personal data stays on the device.
- Flutter and Dart
- UI, logic and data kept apart
- Personal data stays on the device
Features
Stations for every taste
The best-known Spanish stations plus thousands of international ones organised by country. Filter by type (music, news, sports, culture), region or city, with a built-in search.
Favourites and custom lists
Save your favourite stations and organise them into lists, like playlists: folders to jump between news, music or sports stations in a single tap.
History and saved songs
Remembers the stations from the last 30 days and, when the station supports it, the songs that were playing, with shortcuts to YouTube, Spotify or SoundCloud. History can be turned off at any time.
Alarms and shows
Up to 3 alarms that automatically turn on the station of your choice, repeating daily, on weekdays or at weekends. A real radio alarm clock.
Radio from around the world
Explore stations from other countries with global stats, an availability indicator and search by country. Great for practising languages or discovering new music.
Full-featured player
Background playback, lock-screen and notification controls, live info (song, artist, quality, genre), a sleep timer and audio output selection.
Privacy first
No accounts, no sign-up: favourites, alarms and history stay on the device only. Usage data is anonymous and can be turned off.
Five languages
Available in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician and English, adapting automatically to the device language.
Outcome
Live on Google Play and constantly evolving: every version adds improvements without losing the simplicity of day one.
